How the Amsterdam tax works
Amsterdam has one of Europe's highest tourist taxes: 12.5% of the overnight price excluding VAT, on every kind of paid accommodation from hotels to campsites. It rose to 12.5% in 2024 and stays there for 2026.
Cruise passengers who visit without staying the night pay a day tourist tax of €15 per passenger per day instead. There is no general exemption for children for overnight stays; because the tax is a percentage of the room price, extra guests only matter if they change the price.

Worked example
Example: Two adults stay 3 nights in a hotel room costing €220 a night before VAT.
Hotel, hostel, B&B, holiday let or campsite: 12.5% of the room price. €82.50 in tax.
Who is exempt
- Guests registered as residents of Amsterdam.
- Breakfast, when it is listed separately on the bill.
- Cancelled bookings and day use of a room.
Who collects it
Your hotel or host adds it to the bill and pays the City of Amsterdam. For Airbnb and Vrbo bookings the platform collects it. Cruise lines pay the day tax for their passengers.
What's changing
- The city's new coalition (June 2026) plans to raise the rate to 16% from 2027 and by one point a year to 20% by 2031. The council has not adopted it yet.
Not yet confirmed
We couldn't confirm these from an official source, so treat them with care:
- Whether children under 2 are exempt from the cruise day tax (reported by a Dutch tourism site, not on the city page), so the calculator charges every passenger.
- The year the rate reached 12.5% (2024) is from reporting, not the city page; the 2026 rate is confirmed.
