Tourist taxes in Europe
Most of Europe's big tourist cities charge a tourist tax, and many raised it in 2025 and 2026. Most charge a flat amount per person per night that rises with the hotel's star rating; a few charge a percentage of the room price. You usually pay it at the hotel, often in cash on arrival or departure, and it is often not included in the price you see on booking sites.

Things to know before you go
- Check whether it's in your booking price. Booking sites often show "excludes city tax"; the hotel then charges it on arrival or departure.
- Children are often exempt, but the age varies from place to place: see each city's page.
- Many cities cap the nights charged per stay, so long stays cost less per night.
- Day trips can be charged too: Venice charges day visitors on busy days, and several ports charge cruise passengers.
