How the Milan tax works
Milan changed its tourist tax twice in 2026. Since 1 April 2026 a 5-star hotel costs €12 per person per night (up from €10), while 1 to 3-star hotels got cheaper. B&Bs, holiday homes and short lets pay €9.50. There is no general cap on nights, and under-18s pay nothing.
The city can cut the tax by up to half during major trade fairs and congresses.

Worked example
Example: Two adults and a 16-year-old stay 3 nights in a 4-star hotel.
4-star hotel or residence: €10 per person per night. €60 in tax.
Some children pay less or nothing because of their age.
Who is exempt
- Under-18s.
- Hostel guests up to age 30, university students up to 26, people with disabilities and their companions, hospital-related stays, and police and armed forces on duty.
- Up to 50% off during some major trade fairs and congresses.
Who collects it
Your hotel or host collects it and pays the City of Milan.
