How the Venice tax works
Venice has two charges. Overnight visitors pay the imposta di soggiorno per person per night for up to 5 consecutive nights. It varies with the type and star rating of the accommodation, where it is (the historic centre and Giudecca cost most; lagoon islands and the mainland less) and the season: from €1 in a 1-star hotel to €5 in a 5-star hotel in the historic centre in high season. Children under 10 pay nothing.
Day trippers pay the access fee (contributo di accesso) instead, on set busy days only. In 2026 it applied on 60 days from 3 April to 26 July, from 8:30 to 16:00, in the historic centre (not the lagoon islands): €5 per person if paid at least 4 days ahead, €10 after that. The 2026 trial is over: since 27 July you can visit without paying, and the city has not yet decided on 2027.

Worked example
Example: Two adults, an 8-year-old and a 13-year-old stay 6 nights in a 4-star hotel in the historic centre in high season.
4-star hotel, historic centre, high season: €4.50 per person per night. €56.25 in tax.
Only the first 5 nights are charged. Some children pay less or nothing because of their age.
Who is exempt
- Overnight tax: children under 10, Venice residents, people with disabilities, people having treatment in Venice and one companion, and coach drivers and one guide per 25 people.
- Access fee: children under 14, people staying overnight in the municipality (they pay the overnight tax instead), Veneto residents, and other listed groups.
Who collects it
Hotels and holiday lets collect the overnight tax and pay the City of Venice. Day trippers pay the access fee online on the official Venezia Unica site, which issues a QR code.
What's changing
- The 2027 access fee has not been decided. On 27 September 2026 the mayor suggested up to about €30 on peak days, which would need a change in Italian law (the cap is €10).
Not yet confirmed
We couldn't confirm these from an official source, so treat them with care:
- The hotel rates and the 50% rate for ages 10 to 16 are from Italian trade press (TTG Italia): the official rate tables are PDFs we could not open.
- Low-season rates, and the lower rates on the lagoon islands and mainland, are not in the calculator.
