How the Catalonia (outside Barcelona) tax works
Outside Barcelona (the Costa Brava, Girona, Sitges, the Pyrenees and so on) the Catalan tourist tax is lower, but it also rose on 1 April 2026 and rises again on 1 April 2027. It is charged per person aged 17 or over, per night, for up to 7 nights.
From 1 October 2026 other towns can add their own surcharge of up to €4 per night. Castelldefels, Esplugues de Llobregat, Sant Cugat del Vallès and Sant Just Desvern have approved one, so check the town you are staying in.

Worked example
Example: Two adults, a 10-year-old and a 17-year-old spend a week in a 3-star hotel on the Costa Brava.
Other hotels, campsites and accommodation: €0.90 per person per night. €18.90 in tax.
Some children pay less or nothing because of their age.
Who is exempt
- Under-17s.
- Stays for health reasons, stays paid for by EU public social programmes, and force majeure.
Who collects it
Your hotel or host adds it to the invoice and pays the Catalan Tax Agency.
What's changing
- From 1 April 2027: 5-star €6, 4-star €2.40, tourist flats €2.50, hostels €1, other €1.20 per person per night.
